Anton van Leeuwenhoek built a simple microscope with only one lens. It wasn't a compound microscope, because a compound microscope needs two ar more lens. That microscope was used to examine things such as blood, yeast, insects, and many other small objects.
He also was the first person to describe bacteria, and he invented new ways for making microscope lens better, the best lenses at the time. Past Lenses were dirty and not very good, but they were still useable, lenses became stronger and cleaner as time went on.
